Federal Institute for Regulatory Law and Economics

The Federal Institute for Regulatory Law and Economics (FIRLE) is an annual program for congressional and selected executive branch and independent agency senior staff. The next FIRLE program will take place April 3-6, 2009 at Aspen Meadows, the home of the Aspen Institute.

The FIRLE program focuses on the interplay between economics, legal and regulatory institutions, and rapid technological innovation. It focuses primarily on issues presented by network industries such as telecommunications and electricity and is taught by some of the world's leading academics.

Topics in economic and regulatory analysis include neoclassical economics, transaction cost economics, new institutional economics, Schumpeterian economics and public choice theory. The program gives officials a framework and the analytical tools necessary to evaluate policies carefully. The seminar also covers technological trends in information and communications technology, to give officials a better understanding of the physical aspects of the technologies they are charged with overseeing.

The program encourages close contact between the students and the distinguished scholars who teach the program. In addition to rigorous coursework and lively in-class discussion, the students and faculty also socialize and eat meals together to stimulate further interactions.
